Introduction and Preface
We would like to offer a brief introduction to object-oriented programming (OOP) in the programming language PHP4 in this chapter.
With this chapter we address those, who know their way around in PHP, but have no experience in object-oriented programming yet. We want to simplify your entrance to the object-oriented world and to the powerful object-oriented Portalsuite library „Portalsuite Objects“ in this chapter.
Strictly speaking, PHP4 has got a purely object-oriented base conception, but unfortunately it does not represent all concepts of object-oriented programming by far. On the other hand it makes your entrance to PHP much more simple ;-)
Object-oriented programming represents a completely different way of thinking and solving problems in programming. For now the most important thing for you is to learn the conception of PHP and only farther the syntax regarding object-oriented programming in PHP, since the syntax is simple !
One could compare object-oriented programming with beer. Like the first time when friends came to obtrude the malty beverage, the question crosses one’s mind, what others may like about beer - and indeed many people do not like beer at first. But, after some time, most of the people value beer and keep drinking it ;) Like beer, object-oriented programming has got a taste, you have to get used to in order to appreciate it. Once you are familiar with the base conception of object-oriented programming, the question crosses one’s mind, how you ever could do things without... Object-oriented programming is simply fun and is one of the greatest inventions in the field of programming of the last years, but ever and anon it leads to confusion amongst those, who are unfamiliar with it.
