Introduction and Advantages of Configuration Sets

In the last chapters the basic template functionality of the Portunity Portalsuite 2002 has been introduced. You already got to know different PHP functions like PrintCategoryTree, PrintCategoryArticles etc. as well as their interaction in the templates and their effects on the website.

Yet, all introduced functions have also got parameters with which you can influence the functions in the way you wish. Some functions have got so many parameters that it would not be clear to pass thirty or more parameters in the templates already to the functions in a row. Therefore the configuration setshave been introduced in the Portalsuite 2002.

Configuration sets are parameters of a template function which are stored in the Portalsuite data base and can be edited easily via a web form in the Administration Center per mouse and keyboard. In the templates, during the function call you just have to give the name of a stored configuration set, in order to use the parameter that are defined there.

Through this the number of function parameters is reduced from some dozens to exactly one parameter, namely the name of the configuration set. A further advantage: Once a configuration set has been applied and linked in the template, someone without HTML or PHP knowledge for the templates can make changes in the configuration sets easily. If there is no reference to a configuration set within a function, the default settings are used.

The configuration sets build another important block of the Portunity Portalsuite template conception: they manifold and broaden the possible fields of application of the template functions provided by the Portalsuite enormous !
